The date was Saturday, May 2, and the venue Verizon Center. It was Game 1 of the playoff matinee matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.
It was the Capitals’ first trip past the first round since 1993.Semyon Varlamov made the most incredible save against Sidney Crosby. The rookie goaltender, who had played in only six regular season games before the playoffs, had 34 saves including the acrobatic stick save that robbed Crosby of a goal with two minutes left in the second period.
Chris Kunitz passed the puck back to Crosby, and completely out of the crease, Varlamov spun around and stopped the puck at the goal line with the heel of his stick. Crosby turned and raised his right arm to celebrate then kept skating when he realized no goal.
An amazing playoff save that had Capitals fans both taken by surprise and ecstatic that Gnarly Varly just denied the Pittsburgh captain.
When you look back at 2009, what is your greatest Capitals memory?
